Another Candidate Files Papers For Senate Seat
Andrew Mielke, 28, filed candidate registration papers with the Government Accountability Board today, and that means a primary election will be held on May 8 against former Sen. John Lehman.
A Caledonia man has registered as a Democratic candidate in the 21st Senate District recall election, triggering a primary election.
Andrew James Mielke filed campaign registration papers Friday with the GAB. He is running as a Democrat, but said he’s focusing on gaining support from independent voters.
Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) currently holds the seat, but state Democrats collected enough signatures to prompt a recall election. In the primary election, Mielke will run against former Sen. John Lehman (D-Racine), who held the position prior to Wanggaard. The winner of the primary election would then move to a special election.
While the dates aren’t definitive, the GAB is eyeing a June 5 general election date, with primaries on May 8.
“I don’t think John Lehman is a strong candidate,” Mielke said. “People have already said in the last election that they don’t want him. Also, both Van Wanggaard and John Lehman aren’t good listeners. They just side with their own parties. I’m going after the independent voters and I think this district has a lot of them.”
Mielke said he decided to run because he’s frustrated with both parties.
“I want the educational system restored,” Mielke said. “It’s to a point where we need more money in the educational system – from tech colleges to the elementary schools.”
Working as a writer for the CNH catalogue for about a year, he said he had to take a cut in pay to work closer to home and he decided to run after the redistricting maps were redrawn, he said.
Lehman and Justin Phillips, Wanggaard’s campaign manager, both said they’ve never heard of Mielke.
“He may be someone who is not a Democrat,” Lehman said. “I know that was a problem in the last recall election. I know the Democratic Party of Wisconsin has been strongly endorsing me.”
Mielke, 28, said he’s not affiliated with the Republican Party and he’s “just an average guy.”
Lehman said running a campaign would also be costly.
With regards to money, Mielke said he’s hoping for the financial support of his future constituents since he doesn’t have the backing of big corporations or unions, and that he doesn’t believe money should be the only thing that wins an election.
“I’m mainly listening to what the people want,” Mielke said. “A lot of seniors in this area want change. A lot of people my age are going to be that voice and I’m going to be that voice for them.”

Well, if he can garner more than four supporters, he may just give Lehman a run for his money in the primary. If the DPW was smart, they'd consider backing Mielke over Lehman, but then again, we're talking about Tate and Zielinski, aren't we?
If Mielke is such an independent though, why not just run an independent campaign instead of trying to affiliate with the Democrats?
Regardless, this one will be fun to watch!
But for the record, Van is a great listener and has been a great state Senator.
WANGGAARD to VICTORY!!! It's just Van-tastic!!!

“I want the educational system restored,” Mielke said. “It’s to a point where we need more money in the educational system – from tech colleges to the elementary schools.”
REALLY? What is wrong with your statement? MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!
Clueless. Why don't you are Ron Zerban go and talk about some more "entitled benefits" - aka wealth transfers.
In Racine , Domestic Partner Benefits (more Wealth Transfer), Gay home buyers, and Fish Farmers are going to save the CITY! Let's add more taxes so that teachers can buy even more and larger SUV's and McMansions and burn fuel up in an orgy of destruction of finite natural resources!
You want reality? America runs on borrowed Chinese money and the Perto-Dollar that is backed by the largest and most powerful military in the World - and that Petro-Dollar trade is ending! When that ends - it's over! Game Over! We're almost there!
Seniors and Baby Boomers want something? I'll give you something - some free advice. In the very near future, with the loss of the Petro-Dollar and Peak Oil - Good health will be PRICELESS, all others will be dead.

Tim Scott- you make some good points, but lose it all with false statements - "let's add more taxes so that teachers can buy even more and larger SUV's and McMansions..." you do know teacher's salaries in Wisconsin are public record, right? no? Didn't think so. If you did, you'd realize Wisconsin starting teacher salary is $25,222 with an average of $46,390 (average of all the counties). Since you mentioned Racine, Racine's average is $55,405. I highly doubt Racine teachers qualify for a McMansion. Obviously you have a grudge against teachers because you also claim they drive gas guzzler SUV's and destroy our natural resources. What facts do you have to back that up? Why do you think teachers should work for less? How about your Walker? He makes $144,000. Shouldn't he make less too? He took a raise instead of a cut. Huh. Go figure. And, yes, this is also public record. Then, you say you want to give free advice to seniors and baby boomers, but all you did was make an opinion. What is your advice? Again, you mentioned some very valid points that none of the politicians seem to give a rats butt about, but you ruin your argument by false statements. This is a free country, Mielke can run if he wants- you don't have to vote for him. Personally, I wouldn't vote for any candidate who only states opinions. I want "this is what I propose to do" statements, a plan of attack, and so far haven't heard anything that really benefits the state - including what Walker has done.

Midwest George - your lies and obfuscations are appreciated. Keep lying to yourself and perhaps others will believe your lies.
You pulled those numbers from your dark nether region - Let's try the FACTS:
Wisconsin DPI website: http://dpi.state.wi.us/lbstat/newasr.html
Per DPI: RUSD LOW Salary: $38,903
HI Salary: $89,947
AVG Salary: $55,405
Average Fringe Non-Taxed: $28,533.
Forgot that big, untaxed, benefit package - didn't ya George. Lied about salaries - didn't ya George.
My advice for whiny and complaining Teachers - Don't let the door hit you on the way out. It is time to cut those numbers by 1/3, fringe by 1/2, and to start taxing the fringe benefits.
RUSD is a massive huge Corporation with taxing authority that is abusive to property owners. The Corporate Unified School Administration needds to be abolished, along with all the gold-plated boat anchors that work there, and schools be returned to local control.
Public employment is a privilege, not a right. Teachers - feel free to QUIT, move along, become your own boss, and make what you're really worth!
I guarantee you - not one will take me up on it - but they will continue to scream and shout for more every day of their life.

Tim Scott -Where's the lies? Please explain. Perhaps I didn't explain it very well, or you didn’t bother to read what I said. Here goes: Wisconsin starting teacher salary is 25,222 with an average of 46,390, for all the teachers in the state, not just Racine. Both are lower than Racine because smaller school districts pay less bringing the starting and average overall down. www.teacherportal.com/salary/Wisconsin-teacher-salary. Racine's average is $55,405, which you regurgitated. In Racine, some make 89,947 and some make 38,903, which you stated, and I stated the average is 55,405, which you also stated. So, again, where's the lies? If you don’t understand how averages are derived, there is plenty of info on the web - or find a math teacher. Do you really think someone making 89,947 can afford a McMansion as you claim? As for cutting fringe benefits in half – do you work? If so, ask your HR department how much your fringe benefits cost the company, and figure out the percentage - or ask a math teacher for assistance. The Department of Labor publishes this information as well. I'm curious, how much do you think a teacher should be paid to teach/parent/babysit/mentor? Remember, you get what you pay for. Treat them like crap and soon you will see a decrease in the quality coming in - and is that really what you want for future generations?

Midwest George - A Community should pay what a Community can afford. What part of that statement do you find difficult to understand?
I am sick and tired of OVERPAID and OVERCOMPENSATED public employees using one overpaid bureaucrat's salary to justify their demands for a salary increase.
"Remember, you get what you pay for. Treat them like crap and soon you will see a decrease in the quality coming in - and is that really what you want for future generations?"
MORE LIES! The taxpayers haven't gotten anything - TRILLIONS SPENT ON EDUCATION IN WISCONSIN - WHERE IS THE FRUIT? Why is Racine a garbage dump? SInce when does treatment of Teachers in the Community = PAY?
YOU, and YOUR THINKING is the problem.
Public Education needs to be abolished - the gravy train ended, and the responsibility needs to be turned back to parents and local parent groups. Since Hortonville education became a $$ racket and has become a failure!
GO - just GO where the grass is greener.
I am sick and tired of the constant - "The grass is greener on the other side - so give me more or I will leave" argument from public employees. GTFO if you feel that way.
I am sick and tired of being held hostage by whiny public employees.
I understood what you said - same -o -same - o -.
The education racket and industry which feeds on the public trough with no accountability needs to be stopped. Long ago it ceased being about children and education!

Free Clue Two: "“I’m mainly listening to what the people want,” Mielke said. “A lot of seniors in this area want change. "
UH, that change isn't more of the same-ol-same-ol- increases in property taxes to pay for your money for education mandate, throw Seniors out of their homes, and reduce their purchasing power.
People can work for more - or less - Teachers of the future are going to have to work for less, or not work at all. Wake up young boy.

Uh, Andy, we've witnessed plenty of change. Democrats were thown out of office in Assembly, Senate, Governor, congress and US senate. A shellacking, is what the President called it. The reform platform was installed. But alas, change is hard on Democrats thrown out of office. They've hijacked the agenda trying to reverse the reforms. That would include fattening up education and entitlements. So is that what you are running on, but without the union support?

Why is it that when any candidate talks about education, more money is involved? RUSD has plenty of money with a nearly $300 million budget, or $12,000 per kid. It is what they do with the money that is more important than how much they have. Until people wake up and change who is on their school board, you will get the same results and the same cries for more money.

I hope everyone reads this and thinks about it before casting their vote in the upcoming RUSD Board of Education election.
We need more people like Mr. Dey who are unafraid to tell it like it is, no matter how dirty the truth may end up being.
This election has essentially come down to teacher's union vs. children.
DEY stands with the children and we should stand with DEY!
Vote BRIAN DEY for RUSD Board of Education if you truly care about the children!

So, we have a 28 year old tech writer for CNH and had to take a pay cut to remain closer to home. Not much political experience there.
His platform? “I want the educational system restored,” Mielke said. “It’s to a point where we need more money in the educational system – from tech colleges to the elementary schools.”
Sorry Mr. Milke but you lost me at "more money". You are apparently unaware of the extravagant levels of $$$ waste that defines RUSD, like the $10 million "headquarters", and $700,000 in lighting with a 20 year payback.
Out of the gate, you fail to impress.

Tim Scott - I asked you a simple question: "How much do you think our teachers should be paid?" Instead another senseless diatribe. Am I to understand you blame Racine teachers for Racine's current economic state? And your statement to abolish public education and the responsibility turned back back to parents and local parent groups - great idea! We'll all chip in 5 bucks and build a school and see who wants to volunteer to be the teacher! Hey, sounds like a job for you! You clearly are out of touch with reality and your views are extremely myopic. Perhaps you should consider further education, or at the very least volunteer at your local grade school. Good luck to you.

Midwest George - you assign an importance to children that is all out of bounds of reality. Nice try.
As every Community is different - what part of "What A Community Can Affford" don't you understand. Education worked great when the State wasn't involved.
Blind to the truth - that is what you are. The answer is to dismantle the jobs program and wealth transfer mechanism called State education - or involving the State in licensing. It is an industry and racket of it's own.
Let me guess why you are such a staunch supporter of the status quo - your job, liefstyle and income depends upon the status quo. Of course you can see no OTHER solution to the problem - you are part of the problem.
Your foolish and silly analogies are just that. It reveals the fear you feel for substantative change.
