Belle of the Ball Plays Fairy Godmother for Prom
Prom is a big deal in the life of a high school student, and here in the Racine area, prom is a much bigger deal. But not all girls can afford the finery, so Belle of the Ball steps in to help create the perfect look for a dazzling night.
Girls go to great lengths to look their very best for prom, and here in the Racine area, students perhaps go even further given the deep tradition of the Post Prom event that adds sparkle to the evening.
Unfortunately, though, not all students have the financial means to put together the look of their dreams. This is where Belle of the Ball steps in and serves as a fairy godmother of sorts.
This year, girls can visit the Racine Room at St. Mary's Hospital, 3801 Spring Street, from 7 to 9 pm March 30 and from 8 am to 12 pm March 31. Reservations are a good idea, but walk-ins are welcome. Students can email racineprom@hotmail.com to reserve a time.
Dresses, shoes, and assessories have been collected from throughout the community to provide a one-stop shopping experience.
"The response is amazing," said Justus Morgan of Financial Service Group, one of the sponsors of the event. "People stop by year-round to drop off dresses and shoes and jewelry. I don't know why I'm surprised at how giving our community is when there is a need."
According to the Belle of the Ball website, here's what girls can expect:
- Each girl will be given a personal shopper to help them select
their dress and accessories. - Seamstresses are on hand to ensure the perfect fit.
- Free hair and make-up consultations are offered at select times.
Because everything offered during boutique hours is donated, the website also wants girls to know that dresses in all sizes may not be available and that alterations can sometimes take a while so they should be prepared to wait or arrange a pick-up time.
Donations are still being accepted. Items needed include:
- Formal dresses (bridesmaids, prom, etc.)
- Dress shoes
- Formal jewelry
- Formal handbags
- New, unopened make-up and hosiery
- Dressy shawls and wraps
Anyone who has anything to contribute can bring items to Financial Service Group, 4812 Northwestern Avenue, during normal business hours. Donations can also be dropped off during boutique hours.
