DISCUSSION: Where Should You Take Unwanted Horses?

A Journal Sentinel story highlighted a horse refuge located almost six hours away, but it got me thinking... are there places like that around here?

This story from the Journal Sentinel about a horse refuge in Spring Valley caught my eye this morning.

The farm takes unwanted horses, but it is almost six hours away. What if you really couldn't afford to take your horse there? What do you do?

There's a Wisconsin Horse Rescue Group and their website features refuge farms in Rosholt, South-Central, Beldenville, Pittsville, Blue Mounds, Springbrook and De Soto. The closest farm is in South Central, which is a half hour drive away.

I wondered if anyone knew of any other refuge farms in the Caledonia area. What should a person do if they can't take care of their horses anymore or they are having a hard time paying for needed items?

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
