Educational Assistant Being Investigated For Allegedly Using Excessive Force Against Student
Joan Kuehl, principal at Olympia Brown sent the following letter home.
UPDATE: Sgt. Gary Larsen, of the Caledonia Police Department said: "This a juvenile matter and no action is going to be taken on our part."
An educational assistant at Olympia Brown allegedly used excessive force against a student on Thursday, Sept. 1.
Joan Kuehl, the school principal, sent home a letter Friday telling parents that the alleged incident was reported to the Caledonia Police Department and an internal investigation is being done by the school district.
Stacy Tapp, director of communications and public information for the Racine Unified School District, would not comment on the incident because it is a personnel matter.
Check back for updates.

Another reason not to send your children to a Unified school. The principal signs off on a letter that has the wrong date on it. September 1 was on a Thursday.

Why does there seem to be a pattern of issues with this school ? I remember as a student there many years ago thinking that the special Ed teachers were using excessive force on their students. Maybe there needs to be an investigation of this school ?

Wonder what the kid was trying to do to the assistant. Wonder what actually accounts for "excessive force."

@Heather... good question, I'll find out. @JQCitizen I've only been covering the district since December, but I do know there was that alleged sexual assault of a child by an educational assistant and a substitute teacher was accused of choking a child (but the DA declined to charge her). From my understanding O. Brown serves a larger population of kids who have disabilities/special needs. This may or may not have anything do to with these cases, but it's definitely something we're going to ask questions about. If anyone has children in O. Brown, I'd love to hear how it's going. I did talk to one parent last night who said her three children have/are going there and she hasn't had any problems.

@Heather... I'm starting to put two and two together on that Crawford Park incident... apparently it might have something to do with that stolen urinal (who takes those???) at Gorney Park, but I don't having anything official yet. PS...send me your address and I'll come by your garage sale and say hi.

If my kids went to Unified, that would be their school. There was also an incident about five years ago where a kindergarten teacher's assistant had to be restrained and removed from the classroom after biting an officer because she was drugged out on the first day of school. I, too, think the school as a whole should be investigated. If the school serves mostly disability/special needs kids, it should specialize in that and remove the other students who don't have those issues.

In some of my conversations with officials at the PD, the prior principal called the PD often. I think the concerns are legitimate.

I have three children that have gone through O-Brown and can say that the staff is amazing and my children received an excellent education with them. I have never had any problems with any staff members or the administration. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who would ask me. The staff member was a new employee at the school transferring from different school due to the cuts RUSD had to make - thank you Scott Walker.

Sorry, but I don't exactly see how Scott Walker was responsible for this staff member's behavior. How long has this person been employed by RUSD? This would be my children's school, also, if they attended RUSD. I know some children who attend there and have not had any problems. I've also spoken with people who have substituted there and who have transferred their children out. I've heard good and bad about the school.

All I heard was that like 85 people lost their jobs due to the Walker cuts...I never said this was Walker's fault but practically every assistant in Unified had to transfer to different schools so this was not one of Brown's regular staff. No idea how long they worked for RUSD. You will hear good and bad about any school truth be told.

Scott Walker has been in office less than a year. There have been reported problems at this school for over 5 years.
