Multiple Vehicle Accident Sends 4 To The Hospital

Caledonia police and fire are on scene for a multiple vehicle accident on Douglas Avenue. The driver that allegedly caused the crash may have been having medical problems, say officials with the Caledonia Police Department.

At least four vehicles were involved in a crash at about 10:20 a.m. Friday in the 4400 block of Douglas Avenue, in front of St. Rita's Church.

But the driver who allegedly caused the crash may have had medical issues, said Lt. Gary Larsen, of the Caledonia Police Department.

Sgt. Bob Kittel said that four people - three drivers and a passenger - were taken to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary's for injuries. Their conditions were not yet known.

The crash involved a pick-up truck that ended up in the bushes and up against the building at Michael's Machine; two passenger cars that sustained heavy damage; and a garbage truck.

According to officials with the Caledonia Police Department, a GMC pick-up truck was traveling north on Douglas Avenue when the driver crashed into the back of a Nissan. The pick-up then traveled into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a BMW that was traveling southbound.

The BMW then got pushed into a garbage truck, which was riding along side the BMW. After crashing into the BMW, the Chevrolet truck continued west, went off the roadway and crashed into a retaining wall in front of Michael’s Machine office building.

"Witnesses said the driver of the Chevrolet pick-up was traveling very quickly," said Lt. Gary Larsen.

No citations have been issued. Police believe the driver of the Chevrolet may have had a medical issue. However, that has not been confirmed. The incident is still under investigation.
