Teenage Drowning Victim's Name Released

Update: 16-year-old Travon Gray of Racine died Sunday night after he was pulled from the water at Quarry Lake Park.

The Racine County Sheriff's office has released the name of the Sunday night drowning victim at Quarry Lake Park: 16-year-old Travon Gray of Racine.

Gray was pronounced dead at the Wheaton Franciscan Medical Center after being pulled from the water at Quarry Lake Park around 7:40 p.m. Sunday. Gray had been jumping off the pier at the south side of the lake. Gray was with friends who called 911 after he did not resurface.

Our media partners at FOX6 News reported earlier that there were no lifeguards on duty in the area due to recent budget cuts.

According to a report from the Racine Journal Times, Gray is being remembered by those close to him as a great student-athlete.

According to the initial report, a Flight for Life was initially called for Gray, but it was called off when he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Gray was in the water for about 30 minutes before being pulled out by rescue workers.

The City of Racine Fire/Dive Rescue Team arrived on the scene, along with fire personnel from the South Shore, Racine and Caledonia departments.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, according to medical examiner Tom Terry, and officials at the Racine County Sheriff's Office expect a full report to be released Tuesday as well.
