We Are Marshall
Guys, if you don’t tear up a little bit during this movie, there’s something wrong with you. A true story about a plane crash that killed members of the Marshall football team and how the program rebuilt itself without forgetting those it lost. Rated PG.
Remember the Titans
Another true story, this one is about a suburban Virginia high school that hires its first-ever African American coach (Denzel Washington) and how the community deals with racial issues. Rated PG and a good one for the whole family.
Friday Night Lights
A true story – are you sensing a theme here? – based on a book by the same name that documented a high school team from Odessa, Texas. The football scenes are little over the top, but a great story nonetheless. Rated PG-13, mostly for some adult language.
Any Given Sunday
Definitely not one for the whole family, especially the kiddos, but this one is full of action and takes a look at the professional game, albeit an unrealistic look. The best scene is a halftime speech by Al Pacino’s character, the team’s head coach. Rated R, and for good reason.
Rudy
All Rudy Ruettiger ever wanted was to play Notre Dame football and win the approval of his father. By the end of this move, (spoiler alert!) he does both. Another PG flick fine for the whole family.
