How did Labor Day weekend get here so soon? In any event, Racine County is a great place for that one last summertime push before school starts. Here are a few highlights from Real Racine.
Start early in Waterford. The weekend starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at River Rhythms in Waterford. The rock and reggae sound of Hoi Polloi is the last concert of the 2012 free series. Bring your lawn chair, blanket and picnic basket to Village Hall Park, 123 N. River St. Thank you Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce and local volunteers.
The music continues Friday. All good things must come to an end. This season’s final Music on the Monument concert features Folkswagon. The free show is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Monument Square in Downtown Racine. A big thanks to Plumb Gold Ltd for sponsoring the concert series for a third straight summer.
Last call for Summer Trunks! Time is running out to see the Downtown Racine Summer Trunk Show. The 60 beautifully decorated wooden trunks continue on display in front of Downtown businesses through Monday (Labor Day.) The public art items will be put up for auction starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Monument Square.
For your bucket list. A climb to the top of the beautiful Wind Point Lighthouse, 4725 Lighthouse Drive, Wind Point, should be on everyone’s bucket list! You can have your chance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with the Friends of the Wind Point Lighthouse. It’s a steep trek up the 144 steps, but the view is spectacular. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for children ages 6 through 12. Children ages 5 and younger are not allowed. Advance reservations are a must. Call 262-880-8266.
Did someone say food? There’s no better way to wrap up summer than Taste of Racine, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday (Labor Day) at the Racine Zoo, 2131 N. Main St. You’ll find all kinds of food from all kinds of eateries. There is also live music from Igneous, Roy Edwards & Friends and Cheryl McCrary and the Heir Born Band plus kids’ contests, midway games, face painting, raffle and much more. Proceeds benefit Family Service of Racine, a nonprofit agency that provides mental wellness services to Racine area individuals and families.
Act now and save! This Friday is the early bird deadline for The Biggest Loser RunWalk Racine. Starting Saturday, Sept. 1, registration prices increase by $5. The 5k, 10k and 15k events are Sept. 16 starting and finishing at Festival Park, 5 Fifth St. A health and wellness meet-and-greet with Season 5 contestants Dan and Jackie Evans is Saturday, Sept. 15 at Festival Park.
