Racine County Legislators named as Honorary Co-Chairs of Gratitude Gala

November 12 Event will help send WWII veterans on Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.

A bipartisan group of Racine County legislators have been named honorary co-chairs of the first-ever Gratitude Gala honoring the service of local WWII veterans.  Gala proceeds will go directly to Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, a non-profit group that organizes one-day flights to send WWII veterans to visit their memorial in Washington DC.  Since 2008, more than 1,000 WWII veterans from southeastern Wisconsin have traveled to Washington DC to visit their Memorial.

Senator Van Wanggaard and Representatives Bob Turner, Robin Vos, and Cory Mason are all lending their names to the Gratitude Gala Effort.

“These World War II veterans turned the course of history, through their service and sacrifice,” said Senator Van Wanggaard. “Our country, and the world, is eternally grateful for the dedication of these heroes.”

State Representative Bob Turner, a Vietnam veteran from Racine, said he feels that this is a stirring and befitting way to honor those who served our country in World War II.  “These brave men are truly deserving of this trip to view the beautiful World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.   I wish them all a wonderful experience.”

“This is the very least we can do to show our gratitude to these fine servicemen and women who gave so much to secure our many freedoms that we continue to enjoy today,” said State Representative Robin Vos.  “It’s a privilege to be part of this effort to honor our veterans.”

“It is incredibly important that we remind current and future generations about the contributions made by Racine County’s World War II veterans and their families,” said State Representative Cory Mason. “It’s an honor to be part of this Gala to recognize and celebrate their dedication, service, and sacrifice.”

Starting at 6:00pm, Saturday, Nov. 12, at Racine Memorial Hall, 72 7th Street, The Gala will include a USO-style WWII-era Variety Show and 1940s music. Racine Memorial Hall served as the reporting center for World War II Racine-area recruits.
