Horlick High School Students To Perform "Almost Maine"

Horlick High School theater arts will present Almost, Maine, a romantic comedy with the quirky, off-beat sensibility of the popular TV series, Northern Exposure.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves magically falling in and out of love in unexpected, and often hilarious, ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend – almost – in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

“It's a sweet, funny and magical tale that takes the audience on a journey to a town where we see nine quirky, romantic vignettes exploring the impact of love on our lives,” said production director, Kate Kowbel, who is in her second year as director of theater at Horlick High School.  “Almost, Maine uses a "magical realism" style, where everything is realistic except for the one magical moment which seems to fit in seamlessly. The scenes reflect the innumerable hues of love, choice, freedom and the many ways in which we understand them.”

Almost, Maine was the #1 high school play in the United States in 2010. The New York Daily News wrote that the play is “sweet, poignant, and witty. Nearly perfect.” The Boston Globe has described Almost, Maine as “truly sweet and charming… a crowd pleaser.”

Almost, Maine includes the talents of veteran Horlick performers seniors Matthew Sawalski, Brianna Murray, Michaela Evans and Travone Bogan, junior Miranda Russ, sophomores Kelsey Pulera, Carly Varhula, Dakota Kroes, William Hammond, Cody Olson, Mitchell Proctor and Emelia Petersen and features newcomers, senior Jordan Mudge, junior Lauren Kelley and freshman Kaisa Hermann.
