Same Sex Kiss In Doesn't Really Pucker Up

After a crowd of about 4,000 mobbed Chick-Fil-A Wednesday for a national appreciation day, mall security was ready for another over-flow crowd, but it just didn't quite get there.

National Same-Sex Kiss Day was supposed to have been a splashy protest to rival the support for Chick-Fil-A, but it never really puckered up.

Organized on Facebook, the national kiss-in invited same sex couples and gay marriage supporters to meet at the Chick-Fil-A nearest their home at 7 pm and pucker up. The event was in response to comments made by Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy about his support for traditional marriage and

for the appreciation day, mall personnel prepared for another overflow crowd Friday for the kiss-in.

"We were totally prepared, but it was an uneventful day," said Curt Pruitt, general manager of the mall.

Jamie Fuller, owner/operator of Chick-Fil-A, echoed Pruitt.

"We had two couples right around seven, and we saw some earlier, but they were more giggling and taking photos," he said. "We didn't know what to expect, but it's been pretty quiet all day."

One couple did make it a point to visit the mall and take a moment to smooch in front of the restaurant.

Kathryn Schmidt and Ashley Lillo, both 17 and from Racine, said they did kiss at 7 pm because they felt it was important to stand up for who they love.

"We wanted to support what and who we love and live for," Lillo said.

As for eating at Chick-Fil-A, Lillo said she has eaten at the restaurant but won't any longer. Schmidt said she's never been a customer.

The couple have been formally together for about a year, but they've known each other since they were in middle school. Schmidt is a student in an alternative education program at Gateway Technical College and Lillo will be a senior at Horlick next month.

Despite being the only couple to actually stage a kiss, Schmidt said they were proud to be there, and while Lillo agreed, she said she didn't appreciate a comment from a heterosexual couple who taunted them.

"The news camera was here and they shouted, 'yeah, I'd pretend to be a gay for an hour, too,'" Lillo added. "That made me mad."

Schmidt firmly identifies herself as gay and said her family fully accepts her and has since she first told them she was gay at age 13. Lillo said she's more bisexual and that while her brothers and sisters are fine with her sexuality, her mom and her grandparents are far less tolerant.

"I think my mom thinks I'm just playing around," she said.

A few tables away, Cathy Stepp, state Department of Natural Resources secretary, was eating Chick-Fil-A with her family. She said it wasn't a total coincidence they were there for dinner.

"Yes, we are here for Chick-Fil-A, but we also needed some dinner since we were at the mall for other things," she said.

I think Heather handled this report and the one she did on Wednesday very well. Fair and balanced. Editorializing--nope.

No one seems to understand that unless the police, FBI, sherriff, mayor or any other government entity shut down a Chick-Fil-A or intereferd with his business or if the mall management shut him down then its not a violation of his right to free speech. Only under those circumstances would Mr Cathy"s free speech be in jeopardy. People are allowed to respond to speech anyway they choose even advocating avoiding the restaurant so their money doesn't then fund anti gay causes like his does. Exdradite gays, anti gay marriage. pray away the gay clinics. just some of where his millions have gone. Do you think the Dixie Chicks were exercising free speech? Do you think the C&W sets response was free speech. Answer: yes to both mm
