Wisconsin resident Kicks breast cancer and continues to inspire others

‘boob envy’  Written By Shelly (Knowlton) Jones

True Story of a Breast Cancer Hostage.

Shelly (Knowlton) Jones is a typical small-town Wisconsin mom: overwhelmed with kids, work, laundry and bills.  At the age of 35 she was diagnosed with an aggressive, advanced form of breast cancer. Instead of crawling into a hole and wallowing in self-pity, she wrote her first blog entry. “Dear Cancer: Go ahead – BRING IT. See, what you don’t know about me is that I am a fighter . My three kids have kicked my BUTT on a daily basis for years in preparation for this fight. You got nothin’ on them! I have no other choice than to go through this, so I may as well bring my ‘A’ game – you know the one. The one where I beat you and you never come back!”

Jones’ self-published memoir was culled from her blog entries on her Caring Bridge website page, juxtaposed with the comments of her friends and family members. It is dark at times, painfully honest, hilariously funny and straight-up real.  Jones takes the reader through her many surgeries, side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, mood swings, depression – the whole nine yards.  She doesn’t sugarcoat any of it, and it is perhaps the most honest portrayal of a breast cancer journey ever written. You’ll find yourself cheering her on, weeping one moment, laughing out loud the next. And wondering how she managed to get through it all, much less have the energy to write a book about it.

With tremendous support from her community, Jones discovers that she doesn’t have to fight the cancer battle alone. Gathering strength and love from them, she pushes through and then past the “cancer mom” stigma to become a small business owner, author and survivor. She also credits her very supportive husband, Andy, and portions of the book are also a tender love letter to him.

This “cancer hostage” proves that with a wicked sense of humor, tremendous courage and plain old stubbornness – cancer – after all, had nothin’ on her.

Ms. Jones will be traveling around Southeastern Wisconsin all summer, kicking off her book signing tour at such vastly known venues as the Relay for Life of Fond du Lac; Dodge; Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties.  She has been nominated as the 2013 Honorary Survivor of Sheboygan county’s Relay for Life.  Among other events, she has been asked to join the Dirty Girl Mud Run Event at the Waukesha County Expo Center; an event that supports local breast cancer charity organizations while having muddy fun.
