Is Your Child's Car Seat Correctly Installed?

See if you've made the most common mistake in installing your child's car seat, and learn what to do to fix it from certified child passenger safety technician and public health nurse Kathy Vesel.

As many as 80 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly, according to Safe Kids Coalition, but parents have an option if they want to make sure their children are traveling safely.

Kathy Vesel, a public heath nurse with the Central Racine County Health Department, is also a certified child passenger safety technician. She offers child safety seat checks by appointment at the health department, 10005 Northwestern Avenue in the Franksville area.

The most common mistake, she said, is that car seats are not tightened enough, and have too much wiggle room. One inch of movement is all you want, she said. Watch Vesel check and tighten a rear-facing convertible car seat in the video above.

Other common no-nos:

  • twisted straps.
  • straps too high in rear-facing seats or too low in front-facing seats.
