Police: Teen Says He Quit Selling Drugs 2 Weeks Before Bust

A 17-year-old Caledonia teen is facing adult drug charges after a warrant was served on his home this week.

David Schaefer was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with a single felony count of maintaining a drug trafficking place; two misdemeanor counts of bail jumping and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana. If convicted of all charges, he could face up to 5-1/2 years in jail and/or up to $31,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, members of the Racine County Metro Drug Unit executed a search warrant Thursday on a home in the 5700 block of Brookhaven.

Once inside, officers identified Schaefer and another person. Schaefer admitted to police that he used to sell marijuana at the rate of two ounces per week, but he quit selling drugs two weeks ago, the complaint reads.

During their search of the residence, police say they found 3.5 grams of marijuana in a tool box in the garage where Schaefer said he was working on a car. Officers also found 1.3 grams of marijuana in his bedroom.

Police say Schaefer admitted to smoking marijuana and having friends over to smoke with him, perhaps as recently as last weekend.

He remains in the Racine County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond with the conditions that he not possess or use any illegal substances or alcohol. Schaefer was ordered to also undergo random urinalysis tests and to live at his father's house under house arrest and GPS monitoring if he posts bail.

His next court date is June 26 for a preliminary hearing.

Schaefer could face additional time because he also has a pending misdemeanor charge of possession of a switchblade for which he was assigned a $500 signature bond. He was one of several teenagers apprehended in March after Caledonia police over pulled the car that Schaefer was driving because the plates didn't register to the vehicle.

His next court date on the knife charge is July 16.
