Shave Your Head Saturday for Childhood Cancer Research

More than 25 brave and generous people - and one giant puppet - will shave their heads Saturday as an outward sign of support for children with childhood cancer.

Cabbage Heads Tavern and Grille is hosting a childhood cancer fundraiser Saturday to help raise money to help 3-year-old Amalia Mikulanec beat leukemia.

Christie Kern and the St. Baldrick's Foundation are teaming up to present "St. Baldrick's Rockin' Weird 80's Event & Friends of Amalia Benefit" from 3 to 11 p.m. at Cabbage Heads, 3311 Highway H in Franksville.

Kern said she got the idea of hosting a fundraiser one day when she was taking care of some business at Educator's Credit Union and saw a notice taped to a door.

"You know, I just saw the sign at the bank and thought we should do something," she said. "I don't know the family personally but I know how tough it is for kids with cancer and for their families, too."

Kern has been involved with fundraising for childhood cancer before, having put together bone marrow drive and and benefit for Shaymus Guinn, a boy diagnosed with one type of cancer who then contracted leukemia caused by his chemotherapy. Guinn died last December, after a four-year battle.

And while all that head-shaving will certainly be a lot of fun, there's a great deal more in store for folks who attend.

Live music from Weird Science and the Steelin Hearts Steel Drum Ensemble will get people moving and grooving. More, Miss Trini, the Ensemble's 20-foot puppet, will "shave" her head, too, during the event.

People are also encouraged to bring their instruments and/or sing along during the bluegrass/country jam in the afternoon and play the raffle and silent auctions for fabulous prizes.

For those who don't know, St. Baldrick's Foundation was established to help fund childhood cancer research. Only about 4 percent of federal cancer research dollars is dedicated to childhood cancer research, according to a press release from the foundation.

The benefit is open to families with kids of all ages and will be held outside so keep fingers crossed that the promised sunshine sticks around.

For those who can't make the benefit, donations can be mailed to: Friends of Amalia, Educators Credit Union, 1300 90th St., Sturtevant, WI 53177
