Yes, the Quarry Water is Being Filled with Dirt

You asked so we found the answer about what's going on with the old quarry on the northwest corner of Douglas Ave. and 3-Mile Road.

Readers, you asked and we found the answer: the water hole at the northwest corner of Douglas Ave. and 3-Mile Road is being slowly being filled in with tonnes of dirt.

Caledonia Village Administrator and Village Engineer Mike Hayek confirmed for Patch that local businessman Richard Schumacher has a permit from the state Department of Natural Resources to accept dirt from area construction projects to fill the pond.

"It can be difficult to dispose of all the extra dirt associated with construction projects," Janiuk said. "So, this gives area contractors a way to do that."

Schumacher confirmed he bought the site from Body Coate and has the proper permits, but he is nearly at capacity because he only owns half the pond. The other half belongs to Payne and Dolan, the firm that recently purchased Vulcan and now runs the quarry at the northeast corner of the intersection.

"I have to stay 70 feet off the property line to allow for the slope," he said. "We are almost at capacity, but we have no plans to build there."

How the old quarry space filled with water, Schumacher explained, is that quarries are "giant teacups using pumps that keep the water out." Once the quarry isn't used any longer, the pumps are turned off, and the bowl fills up.
