Farm to Table Dinner

The story of the village of Caledonia began long before the arrival of white settlers. Many Native American bands encamped along the winding Root River and on the shores of Lake Michigan. Caledonia's first white settlers, Jacques and Louis Vieu, established a trading post in the early 19th century near the present site of the Caledonia - Mt. Pleasant joint park The area was called Skunk Grove before becoming the slightly more romantic present-day Franksville. Franksville gets its’ name from the Frank's Pure Food Co. The factory is gone and its’ main product, sauerkraut is no longer made in Franksville, but long-time residents still remember the pungent aromas.

Caledonia’s rich land, woods and access to waterways attracted European settlers from many different lands and they displaced the native Potawatomi with their own ethnic settlements. The Township of Caledonia was established in 1842 by territorial Governor James Doly and it covered the northeast corner of Racine County with a westerly border at or near the present I-94 corridor with the southerly border following Hwy K and Northwestern Ave.

You are probably familiar with Franksville and perhaps you also know where Husher is, but what about Kilbornville, Linwood, Tabor and Lamberton?  Kilbornville was on the western edge of the township, near the present St. Louis Church. Linwood was an area around 5 Mile Road. Tabor (a Hungarian word meaning fortress or mobile fortification), a Bohemian settlement, was bounded by Hwy 32, Hwy 31, 5 Mile Road and Six Mile Road. Lamberton was in the far northeast corner where Crestview is today.

Had the course of time run differently Lamberton (Crestview) might have been the home to a munitions plant. The Government purchased almost all of Lamberton during the First World War and began construction of a huge TNT manufacturing facility. The war ended in 1918 before the plant was finished and operational. Eventually the land was returned to local control.

As Caledonia was settled by English, Bohemians, Poles and other nationalities, the above and other neighborhoods developed. Most remain only in memory or perhaps a road name here and there. Some were annexed to the city of Racine; others, such as Wind Point, became autonomous villages.  At one time Caledonia Township was comprised of thirteen or fourteen different settlements.   It was the largest township in our state.

Places names are sprung from legends, people, events, plants, animals and more.  The names were attached to the places as tributes, by committees, and by local folklore and stories’. The stories behind many of the names have been forgotten and sadly, many are forever lost. The reality that once was, no longer exists.  None were ever more than a small space, a slice of time, a remembrance of a particular form or moment.

However our place names are chosen, their history is fascinating.
