Caledonia Man Goes Dumpster Diving For His Wallet

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day. Persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

A man was arrested after he was found digging through a dumpster in his boxer shorts in the parking lot of Four Mile Road Petroleum, at 12:43 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.

Nicco Derango, 22, of Caledonia, was arrested for disorderly conduct and possession of a narcotic, according to a report by the Caledonia Police Department.

Police found Derango inside a dumpster at the gas station. Derango told police he was looking for his wallet. When police asked how the wallet had gotten into the dumpster. Derango told Officer Robert Lyle,“…(H)e was jumping in there with a friend and lost it,” that his brother dropped him off there and he would be back to pick him up.

Derango had thrown leaking boxes and garbage bags out of the dumpster.

A family member told police Derango had taken some sleeping pills and asked for the police to bring him home. But on the way there, Derango insisted that his wallet was still in the dumpster. But police had confirmed the wallet was at his home. Still, Derango said that he would be going back to the dumpster to find the wallet and police watched to see if he would.

About 15 minutes after dropping him off, police saw Derango, who was now clothed, carrying a pizza box and Gatorade and walking toward the dumpster. Police arrested Derango and searched him. They found a prescription for Suboxone, a narcotic.

On the way to jail, Derango told the police he was looking for scrap metal in the dumpster because he needed money to buy his brother a wedding gift and the police had messed up his life “because he was about to be a walk-on football player at the University of Wisconsin.”
