According to a report by the Caledonia Police Department, an argument had broken out between Bouwma and the family member. Bouwma had punched and broken a window, a television and other property because he was angry. Bouwma’s family member told police Bouwma had been drinking when he made the threats. Bouwma had collected his father's guns, put them in the bed of his truck and went to his new residence.

Bouwma was angry because the family member would no longer watch his dog.

Police responded to Bouwma’s residence in the 4400 block of Kennedy Drive, set up a perimeter and took him into custody.

Bouwma’s girlfriend was upset with police because of how Bouwma was taken into custody because they “shoved him to the ground and put a gun to his head.” This happened in front of the woman’s two-year-old daughter. Police explained their perspective and the woman said she understood. They asked her where Bouwma’s weapons were and she said he had several guns in her truck and apartment.

A loaded .45 Taurus handgun was found in the apartment and 50 firearms, handguns, shotguns and rifles were found in the bed of the truck. Bouwma’s girlfriend told police he inherited them from his father.

He was taken into police custody and transported to the Racine County Jail.
