Caledonia Police Get Explosive Start To Weekend

Dynamite found in field by Caledonia resident.

A Caledonia resident found two-quarter sticks of dynamite that were detonated at Shoup Park at 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

Lt. Dan Warren, of the , said the resident found the dynamite in a field on the northwest corner of Three Mile Road and Main Street at 8:45 p.m. The resident, a Vietnam veteran, recognized that the two cylinders were dynamite and called the police department.

“Sometimes those are unstable so we called the Milwaukee Bomb Squad down because they have the x-ray equipment,” Warren said.

“The power of those was equivalent to two M-80s, but you don’t know what they might have been packed with,” Warren said. “We’re trained not to transport explosives.”

The Milwaukee Bomb Squad performed an x-ray on the dynamite and determined the dynamite didn’t have anything else packed into it. They transported the dynamite to Shoup Park, dug a hole and detonated the dynamite.

“With the waves, I don’t think anyone even heard it,” Warren said.
