Fire Investigators Don't Know What Started July 4th Garage Fire

But they do know what didn't cause it.

UPDATE: Joyce Duwe told police she was awoken by the sound of three loud pops inside her garage. When she opened the door to the garage, she saw the fire and went to wake up her husband. The fire started in the garage, but the source of the fire is unknown. However, police noted that it was not suspicious or fireworks related.

Roger and Joyce Duwe should have been watching the fireworks, but they had decided to turn in early instead.

Instead, homeowners Roger and Joyce Duwe watched as firefighters tried to keep the flames from their burning garage away from their neighbor's home on Monday, July 4.

But the fire still melted off the siding of the neighbor's garage.

From the top of a large ladder truck, firefighters from Caledonia sprayed water at the top of their home, 5720 Red Maple Court, at about 10 p.m. Members of the South Shore Fire Department and Caledonia fire departments unraveled rolls of fire house. Neighbors stood in their front lawns in awe.

Lt. Dale Rozina, of the Caledonia Fire Department, said there were no injuries, but Roger and Joyce probably wouldn't be able to return to their home last night.

"The electricity has been cut off, and there's probably way too much damage," he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Rozina said.

This was the second major fire the Caledonia Fire Department had responded to on July 4th. The other one, at was an eight-unit apartment building.
