Firefighters Put Out Two-vehicle Fire

Fire likely caused by electrical problem.

No one was injured in a two-vehicle fire that started at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday and damaged a garage at 3010 Stonebridge Drive.

A vehicle started on fire after the owner had just replaced a battery, said Jeff Henningfeld, battalion chief with the Caledonia Fire Department.

The fire spread and a second vehicle then caught fire. The garage was also damaged.

“Because the fire was so close to the garage, we initiated a full response,” Henningfeld said.

Fire and rescue personnel from two fire engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance and Fire Chief Dick Roeder responded as did members of the South Shore Fire Department.  The fire was under control at 12:54 p.m., but both vehicles were a total loss. The fire also damaged the garage door, siding and gutters, but there was no damage to the interior of the home.

Damage is estimated at $5,000 for the garage, $15,000 for a pick-up truck and $3,000 for the passenger vehicle.

The cause of the fire was likely electrical, Henningfeld said.

“With vehicle fires it’s tricky to determine the cause because everything is inside, but the fire started in the engine compartment and the owner had just replaced the battery,” he said. “So we believe this may have been caused by a short in the wiring.”
