Maurice Lee Lyons, who was living at 418 3 Mile Road, had a felony warrant out for his arrest from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department for failing to register as a sex offender. Lyons now faces a possible felony charge for failing to register as a sex offender in Caledonia. The Caledonia Police Department has forwarded the case to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office, however, no formal charges have been issued.

According to a press release from the Caledonia Police Department, detectives received a tip that Lyons was living in the residence with his daughter. Officers arrested Lyons for not registering in Racine County after they found he had been living in Wisconsin since April 4. State laws require sex offenders to register with local law enforcement agencies within 10 days of establishing residency.

Caledonia Police Sgt. Brian Wall explained that because Lyons is a convicted sex offender from another county, he wouldn’t have been allowed to register anyway because his daughter had only lived at the Caledonia residence for six months.

“The way the statute reads, offenders are expected to return only to the county that they offended in,” Wall said.

Caledonia’s Sexual Offender Residency Restriction Ordinance would have required Lyon’s family to live here two years before he would have been able to register in the County and that's only if they lived in Caledonia at the time of the offense.

Detectives told Lyons since he didn’t comply with the ordinance he can’t return to the Three Mile-Road address.

Lyons is currently in custody at the Racine County Jail.
