Man Charged For Allegedly Sexually Assaulting Woman In His Car

The woman didn't know the man very well, but some key steps she took led to his arrest.

A 27-year-old Racine man is facing a felony sexual assault charge after he allegedly tried to have sex with a woman he barely knew.

James C. Hunter was charged with second-degree sexual assault, repeater, and false imprisonment, repeater, by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

If convicted, Hunter faces up to 50 years in prison and fines up to $110,000. In the last seven years, Hunter was convicted four times for misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, domestic violence, batter and possession of marijuana. He also had two felony counts of bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint, Hunter had promised a woman that he would take her to her grandparent’s house on Monday. The woman didn’t know him very well, only through a friend of a friend. Hunter picked the woman up at her friend’s house in . The woman told police that she and her friend wrote Hunter’s license plate down because she didn’t know him that well.

Hunter allegedly gave the woman a false name and started “making weird turns.” Feeling uncomfortable, the woman told Hunter he better have a driver’s license and not have any warrants because a police officer often sits at the corner of Three Mile Road and Main Street.

The woman told police that that Hunter pulled into the Johnson Bank parking lot, tried to have sex with her and put his hands around her neck.

After the woman struggled to get Hunter off of her, she realized that Hunter had locked the doors. She tried to call the police on her cell phone, but Hunter allegedly took the phone from her. She was eventually able to get out of the car and she ran screaming saying that she was going to call the police. Hunter took off in his car.

Police were able to find Hunter through his license plate, and the woman identified Hunter in a photo line-up.

Hunter told police he and she were “going to go and ‘pick a large quantity’ of something,” according to the complaint. He told police that he went into the parking lot “because there was a car behind him and tried to push DSW out but she had her seatbelt on.” He denied touching the woman.

Hunter is being held on a $25,000 cash bond. He’s set to have a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. July 11.
