Man Crashes His Truck, Gets Turned In By A Dispatcher On Her Way Home

Shawn Gayhart, 40, of Waterford, walked away from a rollover car crash. He didn't call the police, but a dispatcher who took the call at work found him walking in the street on her way home.

A man was injured in a one-car crash that happened on Five Mile Road east of County Trunk H on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

Shawn Gayhart, 40, of Waterford, was arrested for driving a vehicle after revocation-causing property damage, suspicion of drunk driving (6th offense), failing to stop for a stop sign, and hit-and-run property damage.

A officer found that a 1997 Yukon had failed to stop at a T-intersection, struck a ditch, went airborne, rolled and landed about 100 feet from the roadway at 2:10 a.m.

The driver wasn’t in the truck when the officer came across the crash.  Officers had searched the area, but they were unable to find Gayhart.

About an hour later, as officers were processing the scene of the crash, a Racine County dispatcher said she was going home after leaving work at 3:13 a.m. when she found Gayhart walking along the side of the road on Four Mile Road, west of County Trunk V. The woman noticed he was bleeding and he asked the woman for a ride, but she called the police because she had been working on the call earlier in the evening and knew after Gayhart had given his name that police were out looking for him.

When police picked Gayhart up, he told police he was not driving, but he was in a car crash and a friend of his was driving.

After failing a field sobriety test, officers took Gayhart to the hospital to get a blood draw and then took him to jail. Charges are still pending the results of the blood draw.

Gayhart's bond has been set for $5,000. His preliminary hearing has been set for March 14, 2012.
