Police Search For Assailant In Attempted Armed Robbery and Battery Case

Police initially thought the case was connected to a Racine murder, but the two are not connected, Police say.

Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery and battery that happened last month.

The incident happened at 11 p.m. May 8 at the Country Inn Motel, 5828 Douglas Ave., but it was reported a few days later. The victim in the attempted armed robbery and battery case called the Caledonia Police Department after seeing media reports of the homicide investigation where a man was killed outside Peg and Lou’s tavern in Racine on May 10.  He said one of the men resembled his assailant.

The report was just recently released because investigators initially thought there had been a connection to the murder. However, they discovered the two cases weren’t connected, even though a woman who was drinking with the men at Peg and Lou’s the night of the murder on May 8 was also mentioned by the victim of the armed robbery and battery.

According to a report by the Caledonia Police Department, the victim told police he gave a ride to woman in his car from a gas station in Racine to the Country Inn Motel because she said her boyfriend’s car had broken down and she needed a ride to the motel. The man told police he took the woman to the motel and gave her some money, not for sex, but just to be nice to her. When he went to leave, a man approached him and told him he needed more money. The victim told police the suspect then started hitting him.

During an interview with police, the woman said she doesn’t remember the incident. She said when she drinks too much alcohol she sleeps with other guys, and has a hard time remembering what happened. Diagnosed with a mental illness, she told police she has major memory loss that increases in severity when she drinks.

When asked about May 8, she couldn’t remember any details of the case. She was shown a picture of the victim, but she wasn’t sure where she saw him. The woman wasn’t sure she the man had given her a ride to the motel, but then she said she has an apartment, so why would she go to a motel?

When asked if she was at the gas station, if her boyfriend’s car broke down, and if the man had asked her if she needed a ride, the woman said she couldn’t remember. However, the victim told police he is “80 percent sure” that the woman pictured in a photo array was the woman.

No arrests have been made. Police are still investigating the case.
