Sturtevant Man Cited for Caledonia Car Crash

The car wasn't his and he didn't have a license to drive it.

A man crashed into a tree and into a ditch, but no one was hurt in a one-car crash that happened at 4:46 a.m. Sunday on Brook Road at Highway 38.

Daniel Nelson, 18, of Sturtevant, was cited for driving at an unreasonable and imprudent speed, hit and run property adjacent to a highway, and operating without a valid driver’s license.

According to a report by the Caledonia Police Department, Nelson was driving a 1998 Hyundai Accent northbound on Highway 38. Police found him and a girl walking about a mile away from the crash. The passenger, whose parents owned the car, told police she was the driver, but police noticed she had a seatbelt burn consistent with being a passenger. The woman told police she was not driving and she was scared, but then she called her mother to come get her and they were waiting for their ride.
