Two Kenosha Men Charged With Robbing TCF Bank

Thanks to the help of witnesses in the area, Racine Police quickly nabbed two men suspected of robbing TCF Bank employees at gunpoint.

Two Kenosha men were charged with robbing TCF Bank employees and then fleeing police by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office today.

Antonio Brown, 28, was charged with armed robbery — party to a crime. If convicted, Brown faces up to 40 years in prison and may be fined up to $100,000. Darnell Williams, 39, was charged with armed robbery — party to a crime, attempting to flee or elude a police officer, and first degree recklessly endangering safety. If convicted of all charges, Williams faces up to 56 years in prison and fined up to $135,000.

According to the criminal complaint, Williams and Brown went into TCF Bank, 3959 Douglas Avenue, about 2:40 p.m. Monday. One of the men jumped over a counter and into the area where the tellers work while the other man stood in the customer area with a handgun and gave orders to the employees.

While telling each of the employees to put the cash in the bag, one of the men told them not to put any dye packs in the bags. When they finished collecting the money, the employees were ordered to run near one of the offices or “they would start shooting,” the complaint said. As the employees ran into the office, the two men left the building and one of the employees ran to the door and locked it.

The employee saw a car leave the parking lot, so she got a partial license plate as it was traveling eastbound on Three Mile Road, according to the criminal complaint.

Racine Police caught up with the car on 10th Street near Carleton Avenue, but the man driving the car (the complaint doesn’t indicate who was driving) didn’t stop after the police put on their emergency lights. Speeding at 40 to 65 mph near Jersted School, the driver didn’t stop at four stop signs, and almost struck a bus and a pedestrian. Eventually, the car was found in the backyard of a residence in the 500 block of South Creek Road, but both men had fled on foot.

Police found flip-flops near the car, cash inside the car, and red dye on the floorboard and on a nearby fence.

Brown was apprehended near a residence in the 700 block of North Street and police found dye-stained money in his pockets. They also found a black jumpsuit with dye-stained cash inside the pockets in one cooler and another jumpsuit in a second cooler. The residents told police the coolers were theirs, but the clothing and cash were not, according to the criminal complaint.

A witness told one of the police officers that he saw a man get into a silver Pontiac Grand Am in the 3500 block of Green Street and that he knew the driver was his niece’s babysitter. He told the police that the man that had gotten into the car seemed “nervous” and wasn’t wearing any shoes.

Police stopped the car on Three Mile Road just east of Erie Street and the passenger was identified as Williams. The female driver told police that Williams asked her for a ride near Jerstad School.

A .38 caliber revolver was also found in the middle of the street near a residence in the 2500 block of South Vincennes Circle. It may have been used during the robbery, according to the complaint.

Both men are in custody at the Racine County Jail where bail has been set for $50,000. A preliminary hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Dec. 6 in Racine County Judge Allen Torhorst’s courtroom.
