Caledonia Fire Contract Settled

Firefighters are due to get raises in 2013, 2014 and 2015, but must also increase how much they pay for retirement and insurance premiums.

Caledonia officials on Tuesday approved the firefighters union contract, putting in place something similar to the police contract settled last month.

Trustees voted 6-1 to approve the contract with Kevin Wanggaard as the only dissention.

The deal covers the years of 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 with wage increases from the village and increased contributions from fire fighters spread out over the period of the contract.

Firefighters will get 2 percent raises each year in 2013, 2014 and 2015, but they will also have to pay into their retirement by increasing their contributions by a third each of those same years. Doing this brings them to the full 6.65 percent non-represented employees pay in their retirement.

Next year also brings changes for healthcare benefits. Under Acts 10 and 32, protective services can no longer bargain for healthcare so all employees in 2013 will be under the same plan.
