Caledonia Highway 38 Dollars Could Be In Jeopardy

Officials will meet in an early morning meeting to sort out whether Caledonia should spend the money or not.

State and local government officials may turn down an already funded road project slated to begin in 2016.

According a story in the Racine Journal Times, the Highway 38 project includes widening some sections of the road and rerouting Highway 38 from Six Mile to Five Mile Road.

At a Village Board meeting, Ron Coutts, the Village President, said Tuesday night that a meeting has been slated to discuss whether to take the funding or not.

Former Gov. Jim Doyle funded the project before he left office last year because officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Department recommended straightening out the road to make it more safe. But the road has already been updated, Coutts said.

“If we decide to turn it down for this project, we lose it and it goes back to the state for other projects to bid on,” Coutts said. “But many people are saying, the road has already been redone, why should we redo it?”

The meeting has been set for 7 a.m. May 23 at the Ives Grove Complex, 14200 Washington Ave., Sturtevant.
