Caledonia Man Tries To Commit Suicide By Running Into Traffic

Caledonia Police officers get the man, who has a bipolar disorder, help after he went off of his medications.

An 18-year-old Caledonia man, who has a bipolar disorder, had an argument with his family and ran out in front of traffic at 4:17 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 in the 4400 block of Highway 31.

According to a report by the , the man walked into traffic and sat down in the middle of road. When police arrived, the man began to run. Officers ordered him to stop, but the man told them he just wanted to be left alone, and he was “off of his medications.”

Police apprehended the man on mental health commitment because he tried to commit suicide and continued to make suicidal threats in the hospital. Police and the man waited at All Saints-St. Luke’s Hospital in Racine for over seven hours before officials with the Racine County Human Services Department approved the funding for his care and space was found for the man to be treated at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, a mental health hospital in Madison that is operated by the state.

According to the report, the man has been to St. Luke’s Hospital 17 times.
