How Well Does The Union Work With the Village?

Gov. Scott Walker and state Republican Legislators argue that municipalities and school district officials need to make rule changes to the collectiive bargaining process.

But how well have local unions done with bargaining?

Jason Hempel, a Caledonia Firefighter and the president of the local fire union, says village officials have worked very well with administrators over the years. Back in the summer of 2009, the Village faced an $800,000 deficit. They didn't put the shortage onto the tax roll. Rather, they negotiated with union and non-union employees to make up the difference by reducing wages and benefit costs.
