Speakers Tammy Baldwin, Cory Mason and John Lehman encourage Racine Labor Center rally attendees to get out the vote and head to the polls.

A crowd of hundreds gathered during a recall election rally hosted by local Democrats at the Racine Labor Center on Saturday.

Holding a variety of signs, the crowd pumped their fists when U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin asked what democracy looks like, and responded by chanting, “This is what democracy looks like.”

Around 350 people turned out for an almost last-minute rally. The racially diverse crowd held signs and wore t-shirts declaring their support for the recall efforts of supporters and volunteers. Like the crowd at the TEA Party rally earlier the same day, people were energized and vocal.

The purpose of the rally was to encourage people to vote and motivate others to do the same, but the real stars of the show were Racine native John Nichols and Ed Schultz from MSNBC and liberal talk radio. Recall supporters cheered and crowded Schultz and Nichols when they arrived.

"Wisconsin is ground zero for the hopes and dreams of the world," Nichols said. "The reason so many people know about what's happening here is because there are still some journalists who pay attention to working people and not just to the rich and powerful."

Schultz said he couldn't give a political speech because of his job as a journalist, but the crowd wasn't fooled.

"Hey, you're here," someone shouted. "Thank you!" another voice rose above the noise.

Still, Schultz said it was enough for him to observe Wisconsin doing democracy right.

"I'm here as a reporter, but I'm anxious to see for myself the get-out-the-vote efforts," he said.
