A small conference room at the Racine County Courthouse is serving as ground zero for the recount of 71,868 ballots cast in the 21st Senate District recall election between Democrat John Lehman and Republican Van Wanggaard.

On day one of the recount, Wanggaard's camp gained four votes, but they'll need a lot more to win the seat back. By noon on day two, the vote totals hadn't changed as election workers had counted two polling places in Caledonia.

Justin Phillips, Wanggaard's campaign manager, said there were minor hiccups in the vote totals that needed to be addressed.

"Some of the poll books weren't adding up," he said. "Right now we're just waiting until something goes wrong and keeping on eye on things."

Eric Peterson, a representative from Lehman's campaign, said two polling places had been counted, but they hadn't lost or gained any votes Thursday.

"It's just been little stuff that we're seeing β€” the number of original ballots not matching the number of remade absentee ballots the clerks had to make because they had to transfer the paper copies of the ballots onto real ballots that could be put into the machine," he said.
