Mining Regulations Topic of Lecture at River Bend

A former secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will speak at the River Bend Nature Center April 2.

On the heels of mining reforms passed earlier this month, the River Bend Nature Center will host a lecture on Wisconsin mining regulations.

George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and a former secretary of the state Department of Natural Resources, will speak at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Nature Center, 3600 N. Green Bay Road.

Meyer will discuss the bill and "how new policies and regulations need to protect our natural resources and public health while allowing safe extraction of our mineral resources," according to a Racine County Conservation League news release.

He has previously criticized the bill, saying it would harm the environment as well as the public's ability to give input.

Meyer has worked in conservation for more than 40 years, including 32 at the DNR. He also taught conservation and environmental policy at Lawrence University.
