Trustees Refuse to Get in the Middle of Private Road Dispute

A private driveway to be used by two Caledonia companies is at the center of a dispute the Village trustees unanimously agreed not to get in the middle of Tuesday evening during their Village Board meeting.  

The driveway, to be shared by Time Transport and Madison Truck Equipment along the 27th Street frontage road, was constructed off center by 4 feet of the 66-foot right-away, explained Village Engineer Mike Hayek, who brought the issue to the attention of the Village Board. 

Officials at Time Transport has requested the driveway be left as is. Officials at Madison Truck and Equipment have asked for the driveway to be reconstructed. 

"There's no need to remove it, it was built to standards and it could be a future public street," Hayek said. "Most of our roads are not perfect so we are recommending to leave it as is." 

Hayek told the board Time Transport hired an earth builder that used a GPS system to line up the roadway and marked the ground with paint instead of stakes. 

"The paver showed up and should have had stakes from the general contractor … so they eyeballed it," Hayek said. "It is the responsibility of the paver and earth work contractor." 

Cutting off one side of the driveway and adding concrete to the other side would create a problems down the road with cracking, Hayek said. 

"I drove over there and I think the work that was done is very nice actually and I was pleased with it," Trustee Kathy Trentadue said.
