Water Agreement OK Means Business Development on Horizon

Caledonia can get serious about planning development now that the PSC has approved a 40 year wholesale water agreement with the City of Racine.

Now that the Public Service Commission has approved Caledonia's 40-year wholesale agreement with the City of Racine, village officials can get to work planning development along specific corridors in the village.

Trustees on Jan. 21 approved the contract, but before they could make any moves toward planning development, the PSC had to give the agreement the stamp of approval.

Village President Bob Bradley said then that the agreement is really just an extension of the one that expired, but Caledonia's ability to attract meaningful development hinged on both trustees and the PSC approving it.

"We can't even play the game for development because we lack sewer and water along primary corridors that lead from I-94 into the village," he said. "I love the rural parts of this village, but we can develop along those roads and still keep those rural areas preserved."

Village Administrator Mark Janiuk announced at the Aug. 5 village board meeting that the water agreement was approved by the Public Service Commission.

When Patch spoke with Bradley Thursday, he said focusing sewer and water connections along Highway V and Highway K is the priority.

"There are some utility loops we need to close so that is Highway V," he explained. "Then, we'll look at Highway K to bring more development into the village."
