We Energies Continues To Warn Of Scammers

Customers get alert when paying their bill on the utility company's website.

We Energies continues to alert customers of a scam that promises to pay utility bills through federal stimulus money offered by the Obama administration.

The utility company has placed an alert on its Web site telling customers who pay their bill online of the threat.

The notice reads:

"Alert: A scam promising federal money to pay utility bills has been discovered. No such program exists, and payments made using bank routing numbers in the scam will be rejected. Please use your current banking information to make online payments."

We Energies' spokesperson Cathy Schulze said Tuesday the alert was placed on the site in response to a nationwide scam that arose a few weeks ago.

"Fortunately we did not see a huge impact here with our customers," she said. "It was very minimal, thankfully."

A couple of We Energies customers were approached by the scam artists, Schulze said.

Schulze advises customers to be skeptical of people that contact them with a phone call.

"If we do call people, we typically are not asking them for personal information," said Schulze, who added that if customers have questions about their service, billing assistance programs or their bill, they should call We Energies.

Residential customers can reach We Energies at (800) 242-9137.

telling, everyone expects something for free from the Obama government. Welcome to the new Greece.
Greg July 31, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Why should it not be free? Electricity is a RIGHT.
atthec44 July 31, 2012 at 07:50 PM
So there's not really any Obama money in his stash?
greggo July 31, 2012 at 07:51 PM
Food is a right, electricity is a right, driving a Lexus is a right....keep sticking it to whitey, Barry.

So is a high speed internet connection.

This isn't political, folks....is it that hard to focus on the subject of the article. Have you seen the email? Have you heard of anyone who's gotten taken by the scam?
Heather Asiyanbi (Editor) July 31, 2012 at 08:35 PM
These scams are being run by bad people trying to bilk people out of their money. In some cases, there might be folks trying to get something for nothing, sure. But in most cases, these are good people who are just really naive.
James R Hoffa July 31, 2012 at 08:40 PM
The scam appears to be taking advantage of people's political perceptions, doesn't it? On the political spectrum, a person adopting what kind of political ideology would be more apt to believe and wanting to take advantage of a program "promising federal money to pay utility bills?" It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to correctly answer this question ;-)
Bren July 31, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Mr. Klappa of We Energies makes $1 million year, with a compensation package of $10 million per annum, compliments of We Energies customers. What was that scam again? ; )
James R Hoffa July 31, 2012 at 08:53 PM
@Bren - Who's forcing anyone to patronize WE Energies?
Greg July 31, 2012 at 08:56 PM
Skimmer...... :+) "Alert: A scam promising federal money to pay utility bills has been discovered. No such program exists, and payments made using bank routing numbers in the scam will be rejected. Please use your current banking information to make online payments."
Heather Asiyanbi (Editor) July 31, 2012 at 09:08 PM
@Hoffa - unless you live off the grid, which is an expensive undertaking subject to a lot of zoning here in the city, you have no choice but to patronize WE Energies. Is there another electric/gas company of which we're not aware that we can call for competitive pricing? So yes, we are forced in a way to use the products and services of WE Energies.
Avenging Angel July 31, 2012 at 09:24 PM
It has been my experience that only greedy people get scammed.
Greg July 31, 2012 at 09:41 PM
I don't think so, the elderly seem to be scam targets too.

More class warfare
Steve ® July 31, 2012 at 09:48 PM
Thank god obama invented high speed internet
James R Hoffa July 31, 2012 at 10:23 PM
@Heather A - Who's forcing you to use electricity at all? ;-) OK, in all fairness, they do have a monopoly. And electricity is considered in today's world to be a necessity. And because of that, I agree that government should be able to limit executive compensation accordingly. Would deregulation help? Michigan is deregulated and most of the state enjoys much lower rates than we do here.
Johnny Paycheck July 31, 2012 at 10:56 PM
@Hoffa, nobody is forcing anyone to use electricity... or eat, crap or breathe.
James R Hoffa July 31, 2012 at 11:03 PM
@Johnny - The Amish, Mennonites, and others get along just fine without electricity.
Heather Asiyanbi (Editor) July 31, 2012 at 11:05 PM
@Hoffa - deregulation would be great! I thought that was already on the books, but I guess not because if we can talk competition for nearly every other aspect of American business, why not for our utilities?
Richard Head July 31, 2012 at 11:25 PM
WE Energies are mere amateurs! Heather says: "If we can talk competition for nearly every other aspect of American business, why not for our utilities?" Why then can we not have competition for the unaccountable insatiable and greedy Corporate RUSD, which is a monopoly with tax authority enforced at the point of a gun with property confiscation for non-compliance? A $270 Million Dollar LOSER. Corporate RUSD IS A BUSINESS! How about the Corporate, monopolistic governments of Racine, Mt. Pleasant, and Racine County - which FORCE union employees upon hapless residents - abuse their taxing authority - force people out of their homes - and create homelessness and unemployment? Corporate government IN A BUSINESS!! Heather says: "we are forced in a way to use the products and services of WE Energies." Why are we FORCED, at the point of property confiscation, to use (Corporate) RUSD,,(Corporate) CIty of Racine, (Corporate) Village of Mt. Pleasant, and (Corporate) public employee union workers? WHY - INDEED! Go off- grid - purchase your own infrastructure - THAT IS YOUR OPTION! It's not too expensive - YOUR PRIORITIES ARE WRONG. You need all that electricity?
Heather Asiyanbi (Editor) July 31, 2012 at 11:35 PM
@Richard - I think the reader doth protest too much. Are you off the grid? Do you use your municipal services like roads? My point was that if we can choose between cable/satellite/nothing and we can decide which phone service suits us best and we can choose where to buy groceries because we have options, why does this same option not also apply to electricity and gas for powering our lives? And by the way, who are you to decide what's too expensive for me or anyone else? If it's so cheap in your estimation, are you willing to foot the bill so more of us can get off the corporate greed of the grid?
jbw July 31, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Greedy people and desperate people would be the two softest targets. Both of them have strong motivation to set aside suspicions and go along with what they want to hear.
$$andSense July 31, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Aren't all politicians a scam? Yet they rarely go to prison when caught in bare faced scandals, lies, deception and the like. WE Energies posts a profit on what we have no choice but accept without an option. Politicians are no different. But your "vote" gives you a choice on who gets to fleece you of your tax dollars.
jbw July 31, 2012 at 11:48 PM
I agree, giving me a warning about this scam is that last straw! I'm going to build a fission reactor and a coal furnace to feed a couple turbines in my back yard! With an electricity bill of $36 last month, how long will it take for my "off the grid" investment to pay for itself? I saw that notice when I did the online bill pay last week. Never heard of the scam before or since.
$$andSense August 01, 2012 at 12:14 AM
jbw Instead, make a turbine that runs on politician's hot air. Now there is a renewable and endless resource.
lavelle August 01, 2012 at 02:23 AM
HEY RICHARD I LIKE UR NAME... IS RUSD THE RACINE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT??
jbw August 01, 2012 at 03:06 AM
I forgot to mention, every time I need to go the WE Energies site I always search for "wienergies" and then click on their site in the search results. So, that's why their web analytics will always show search referals from "wienergies".
Greg August 01, 2012 at 03:50 PM
RH can not see the difference between WeEnergies management and Government? Maybe elections?
