A Great Weekend for Art and More

Early October is ideal for art, music, history — or just getting out. Real Racine has you covered for this weekend.

Enjoy some art. Head to Downtown Waterford from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday for the River's Edge Art Walk. You can take a leisurely stroll to see dozens of artists exhibiting and selling their work. Just look for the flags at downtown businesses and  pick up a map that shows where the artists are showing their work. Trolley rides will be available all evening to get you around the village. You're also invited to take in musical entertainment or stop for something to eat or drink. Visit www.absolutelywaterford.org

More than violins.  Memorial Hall, 72 Seventh St., hosts an unusual show at 7 p.m. Friday. "Black Violin" is a duo of classically trained musicians who blend classic, hip-hop and rhythm-and-blues. They perform about 200 shows all over the world. These musicians promise that you'll see something you've never seen before. Tickets are $12 to $20 are available at the Racine Civic Centre box office, 5 Fifth St., or via ticketmaster.com

Star gazing one more time.  The fall astronomy open house is 7-10 p.m. Saturday at the Modine Benstead Observatory, 63rd Avenue and Highway A, Yorkville. The Racine Astronomical Society invites you for some free stargazing through their telescopes. Please call ahead to make sure the weather is cooperating: 262-878-2774. Visit www.rastro.org for details about the open house and some very cool pictures.

Last call for cars. Saturday is the season's last Coffee & Cars Rendezvous at Roma Lodge, 7130 Spring St. This free car and truck is open to everyone from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

History at the Fairgrounds.  A "living history book" from four centuries takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Union Grove. The annual Half Point Historical Re-enactment takes you back to the time when Union Grove was the halfway point between Racine and Burlington. This year's presenters include the 1600 Scottish Border Reivers who will demonstrate the lifestyles and weapons of that time. Re-enactors, dressed in period costumes will also provide glimpses of history from the Civil War to World War II. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Donations are accepted.
