During the Circles of Peace his workshop, Sanga Root and the Original Root Zen Center offer this workshop, lead by co-founders of the Original Root Zen Center, Linda and Tony Somlai. It incorporates the benefits of stillness walking meditation with the use of spirit staffs (walking sticks) to help participants improve their physical and mental health. Walking meditation gracefully moves the peace and love within and connects to the beauty of our surroundings. This practice enhances the health of both body (endurance) and mind (awareness) by using breath and movement; tools already available in everyday life. Walking sticks, used correctly, bring balance to the body’s movement. The walking stick is often embellished with beads, stone, bone, trinkets, drawings, and carving representing personalized symbols for this mindful walk. As we focus our creative awareness a simple branch becomes a spirit staff. A short walking pilgrimage in the neighborhood follows walking meditation instruction and participant created sacred spirit staffs.
