Situations of Substance with John Nichols

John Nichols, political journalist and author, will present, "Dollarocracy: Unlimited Campaign Cash, Declining Journalism And The Emptying Out Of The Democratic Discourse," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012 at the Siena Retreat Center, 5635 Erie St.

The Supreme Court says corporations  can  spend whatever they want to buy elections. At the same time, newspapers are shutting down and journalists are being laid off at an unprecedented rate. It's a propagandist's dream and a citizen's nightmare, as real information about candidates and issues is replaced by a steady stream of negative commercials. Is this the end of democracy? Not if citizens demand real reforms.

John Nichols, a native of Union Grove, WI, is an American journalist, author, political correspondent for The Nation magazine, and associate editor of The Capital Times. He has authored or co-authored ten books. Of Nichols, author Gore Vidal says: "Of all the giant-slayers now afoot ..., John Nichols’ sword is the sharpest."
