Tornado & Spotter Awareness Seminar

Our Ready Racine Community Preparedness Series continues on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm with our 22nd annual Tornado & Spotter Awareness Seminar.  This seminar will be held at the Center for Advanced Technology and Innovation (CATI), 2320 Renaissance Blvd (County Trunk Highway H), Sturtevant.

In 2011, 38 tornadoes in Wisconsin were confirmed by the National Weather Service, the fourth highest number on record.  In addition, the eyes of the world were on Joplin, MO last year when a massive EF-5 with winds over 200 mph hit the city of more than 50,000 resulting in 161 deaths and over 1000 injuries.  What if that had been Racine?

The storm spotter course will cover storm spotting fundamentals, visual storm structures, basic definitions, terminology and safety.  The advanced spotter course will build upon these principles.  After completing the spotter course, attendees can assist the National Weather Service in alerting the public to threatening weather conditions.

Their mission is to lessen the burden of the National Weather Service (NWS) essential severe weather training and SKYWARN programs. To do this  MASA has established a long and strong working relationship with the NWS by providing on-going severe weather awareness and  training to all interested parties.
