Five People Pull Papers for School Board election

Three incumbents and two political newcomers will vying for three seats on the Racine Unified School Board.

Five candidates—three incumbents and two challengers—are currently circulating
nomination papers for the Racine Unified School District Board of Education.

Voters will elect three members to three-year terms on the School Board in the April 5 election.

  • Incumbant Pamala Handrow of 1601 Grand Ave., Racine, executive director of SAFE Haven of Racine.
  • Incumbant Pastor Melvin Hargrove of 2130 Racine St., Racine, founder of Zoe Outreach Ministries.
  • Incumbant Dennis Wiser of 2517 Pinehurst Ave., a retired teacher and a Racine City Council member.
  • Patrick Flynn of 4124 Mona Park Rd., Caledonia, regional vice president of franchise development at United Franchise Group.
  • Roger Pfost of 3114 Caledonia St., Racine, a Realtor with Re/Max Newport Realty, are also seeking School Board posts.

Pfost was an unsuccessful School Board candidate in 2006 while Flynn is making his first run for office.

Racine Unified School Board members are elected at-large from the district, which
includes the city of Racine and the villages of Caledonia, Wind Point, Mount Pleasant, Sturtevant, Elmwood Park and North Bay. The board's nine members, who serve staggered, three-year terms, are paid $300 a month.

Nomination papers are available at the Racine Unified Administrative Services Center, 2220 Northwestern Ave., Monday through Thursday of this week and on Monday, Jan. 3. Candidates must collect a minimum of 100 and a maximum of 200 signatures from RUSD residents. The deadline for returning completed nomination papers is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4.
