Racine Unified Makes More Staffing Changes

140 retirements in total.

The RUSD School Board has confirmed Jeffrey Blaga as the Racine Unified School District’s interim director of instruction and curriculum. Blaga, the district’s supervisor of social studies, succeeds Jeff Weiss, who was named to the new position of assistant superintendent-elementary last month.

The administrative change, approved at a special School Board meeting on Tuesday (July 5) is part of an RUSD administration realignment that eliminates 10 positions and creates new roles for 17 other posts in the district’s central office.

Other changes, recommended by Superintendent Dr. Jim Shaw, included seven resignations and 18 retirements. At Caledonia and Mount Pleasant schools:

  • Stephanie Phernetton resigned as directing principal of Case High School effective June 30. She is joining the Neenah school district as a middle school principal. RUSD announced in April that Jeff Eben would transfer from Gifford Elementary to Case as principal.
  • Shelley Geiselman Kritek retired as directing principal at Schulte Elementary School. Interviews are being conducted this month for a successor.
  • Irene Nahabedian retired as directing principal at Wind Point Elementary. RUSD announced in April that Kathryn Poznaski, a Gilmore Middle School assistant principal, would become the principal at Wind Point.

About 140 retirements are expected among the district’s teaching, administrative and support staff, said David Hazen, RUSD chief financial officer. The deadline for early retirements was June 15.
