Racine Unified Open Enrollment, Magnet School and Private School Voucher Information

If you were thinking about registering your student for 4k or 5k, sending your elementary school student to an RUSD school other than their neighborhood school, or wanting to know about private school vouchers -- here is what you need to know.

Keeping all of the dates straight for when to register your child for kindergarten or when to enroll them into a school that isn't their neighborhood school can be a daunting task.

So we've made it a little primer on these topics.

Avoid long lines, and delays in getting transportation information by enrolling your child early for Kindergarten, which starts on March 6.

This program allows Racine Unified School District parents and guardians to apply for their student to attend an attendance area school other than their own. Acceptance depends upon space considerations, and the family must provide transportation. Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis.

You can print out the School Choice application by clicking on the pdf tab in the photo gallery of this story. Applications must be returned by 2 p.m. Feb. 6. If you have questions about the School Choice program, please call RUSD's pupil services department at (262) 631-7181.

Enrolling in Racine Unified magnet schools

If you are hoping to enroll your student into one of the three magnet schools in the district—Jefferson Lighthouse, Bull Fine Arts, or Red Apple—they are not a part of the school choice program. These magnet schools have orientation programs in February. Parents need to attend at least one of the orientation programs so you don't have to attend all three if you are interested in all three schools.

Enrolling your child in a private school using the voucher program

More students will be eligible to use the voucher program to send their children to private school because the income limits have been raised for the 2013-2014 school year. Open enrollment for the voucher program begins in February.
