Racine Unified Superintendent: Educating On Less

This is the fifth video of a five-part series of an interview with Racine Unified Superintendent Dr. Jim Shaw and Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant and Caledonia editors. In this video, Shaw talks about the disppointment he felt during the state budget.

Over 1,200 of the district's 2,100 students are living in poverty. The district is expected to do what the community is either unwilling or can not do. They provide health care, dental care, social services, outreach programs for parents, after school, Saturday school and summer school, breakfast and lunch programs. And their budget shrank by $25 million after concessions with the unions. They've cut administrative personnel from 27 to 17 staff, and have lost 132 personnel -- including educational assistants, teachers, and principals.

The effects of these shortfalls on children have yet to be seen, but he knows there will be, Shaw says.
