Most simply, a co-op is a business which operates for the benefit of its owner-members.  Food co-ops meet the growing demand for local, natural, and organic foods produced in sustainable and ethical ways.

The Wild Root Market will reflect the unique and entrepreneurial spirit of Racine. It will be a full-service grocery store with everything you need for one-stop shopping – fruit, vegetables, meat, grains, and dairy, all sourced locally as much as possible -- plus frozen foods, dry goods, canned goods, beverages, and specialty items.

More than Groceries!

The Wild Root Market will offer more than groceries. We plan to include a delicious café and deli, classrooms for workshops and cooking classes, studio space for local artwork, and meeting space for community gatherings. It will be a dynamic place where you will connect with others who share your passion for food and local products.

The Wild Root Market will bolster the economic vitality of Racine by keeping more money within the community, supporting local farmers & other small businesses, and providing good jobs to local residents. We are committed to strengthening a sustainable local food system and enhancing the quality of life in Racine.

You’ll receive a membership card along with all the privileges of ownership, including owner discounts, patronage rebates during profitable years, and annual voting rights in Board elections.  Plus you can take credit for bringing a full-service grocery co-op to Racine. Location, location, location!

We know the importance of location. But we can’t make a decision on location until we’ve got more member-owners. It’s a dilemma faced by all food co-ops in the start-up phase. We currently have over 420 owners, people who know that the Wild Root Market is a fantastic community asset for Racine. We need about 250 more owners before we can secure a location.
