Have Sympathy for the Safety Sign Guy

A couple days ago, I came across this photo produced by Oli Feist and could not help but share it with you.  It is a yellow sign similar to an ANSI compliant CAUTION sign featuring a wounded but bandaged “Safety Guy.”  In its description, it states “Have sympathy for the Safety Sign Guy”. As Oli would say, this is a crappy job to have!  As much as it seems like a “crappy” job, someone (like Safety Guy) has to do it.  You may have heard, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” And Safety Guy can prove it!

According to ANSI standards, there are four key components that make up a safety decal.  They include:

Danger Decal

  1. A signal word panel (NOTICE, CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER)
  2. Hazard identification
  3. Hazard avoidance
  4. The consequence of not avoiding the hazard

Even though the wording on a safety decal states the necessary components to prevent an injury, the picture itself emphasizes it.

Take a look at the picture in red called "Danger Decal" above. The first item I notice is the image with the person twisted around a rotating shaft and it has caused an injury to his hand and foot.  Soon after, it is easy to see the color and the word, DANGER within the picture.  Below the image, is text describing what is found in the picture and how to avoid the injury. In this picture, the signal word panel is DANGER, which symbolizes death or severe injury will transpire.  It is clearly shown with the picture itself that an injury will transpire if the action is not avoided.  With that in mind, I would like to say, thank you Safety Guy as well as ANSI for all the work they do to keep everyone safe.
