The candidate names have been submitted for the various state recall elections, including members of the state GOP. Are they breaking the law by swearing that they're Democrats when they really aren't?
Update, 9:20 am: A story in The Journal Times says that Levinson, the lawyer quoted below, will file challenges to keep the "protest" candidates off the ballot. Citing the state statute 12.13, Levinsin states again that the GOP's "protest" candidates are breaking the law. If he is successful, there will not be a primary in the recall election for state Sen. Van Wanggaard in the 21st District. Instead, Wanggaard's general election would take place on May 8, the same day as the Democratic primary for the governor's and lt. governor's races. Original Story: When is a protest candidate a fraud? It's a question being taken up by the Government Accountability Board at the same time the agency is verifying the number of signatures needed to be a …

John Lehman and volunteer supporters take a targeted approach to canvassing. They split up to talk to voters who are considered "unidentified" or "irregular," to talk with them about why Lehman is running in the recall election for the 21st District.
Former Sen. John Lehman bundled up and headed out Thursday for another day of canvassing. He is running against Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) in the recall election for the 21st Senate District. He said despite having one or two potential rivals for the May 8 primary, he's looking ahead to the June 5 general election. Caledonia resident Andrew Mielke announced last month that while he is not affiliated with either party, he intends to run as a Democrat against Lehman in the primary to then face Wanggaard in the general election. The state GOP, however, wants to guarantee there is a primary here so they're running protest candidate Tamra Varebrook of Union Grove. "We're not working toward the primary, we are focused on June 5," Lehman told Patch…

Six Republican "recall protest candidates" will run for the various governor and senator seats facing a recall election, likely forcing a primary race even in races where a primary was already expected, including in the 21st Senate District.
The "fake Democrats" are coming out again. Six of them, in fact, who plan to get their names on the ballot in the upcoming recall elections, according to an Associate Press article. Though they've been labeled "fake Democrats," GOP spokesman Ben Sparks calls them "recall protest candidates." The group includes: Gladys Huber, running who is running for governor; Isaac Weix, running for lieutenant governor; and Gary Ellerman, Tamara Varebrook, James Engel and James Buckley, who are running as Democrats in four state Senate recall elections. Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, and four state senators, including Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Van Wanggaard, Pam Galloway and Terry Moulton are targeted for recall. The state …

Whether or not Andrew Mielke, the surprise candidate from Caledonia, files papers is irrelevant now that Tamra Varebrook of Union Grove has been tapped to run against John Lehman in the May 8 primary leading up to the recall election of Van Wanggaard.
It's official. The Republican Party of Wisconsin has provided a protest candidate to run in a primary against John Lehman on May 8 for the 21st Senate District. An anonymous source sent photos to Patch of a packet they received in the mail - unsolicited - to help circulate signatures for Tamra Varebrook of Union Grove. Now, a story in The Journal Times confirms that Varebrook was recruited to run as a protest candidate to make sure the recall election against Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) takes place on the same day as the recall elections for Governor and Lt. Governor. The party will not actively campaign for the protest candidates, but they will help collect the 400 signatures needed to get their names on the ballot. Last week, Ben Sparks, …

Residents of the 21st Senate District could be forced into voting during a primary if the Republican Party of Wisconsin runs what it's call a protest candidate to challenge former state Sen. John Lehman in primary.
Whether an independent candidate collects the necessary signatures to put his name on the ballot for the recall election in the 21st Senate District probably won't matter when it comes to a primary election. In a press release on the state party's website, Executive Director Stephan Thompson said the reason for running protest candidates is so elections line up on the same day across the state. The state Government Accountability Board has set the primaries for May 8 and the general election for June 5. In races where there is no primary, May 8 would serve as the general election. "The protest candidates will run as Democrats to guarantee that there is one clear date for the primary election and one clear date for the general election," …

Andrew Mielke, 28, filed candidate registration papers with the Government Accountability Board today, and that means a primary election will be held on May 8 against former Sen. John Lehman.
A Caledonia man has registered as a Democratic candidate in the 21st Senate District recall election, triggering a primary election. Andrew James Mielke filed campaign registration papers Friday with the GAB. He is running as a Democrat, but said he’s focusing on gaining support from independent voters. Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) currently holds the seat, but state Democrats collected enough signatures to prompt a recall election. In the primary election, Mielke will run against former Sen. John Lehman (D-Racine), who held the position prior to Wanggaard. The winner of the primary election would then move to a special election. While the dates aren’t definitive, the GAB is eyeing a June 5 general election date, with primaries on May 8…
