Gov. Walker: Back to School

Gov. Scott Walker: Tonette and I are grateful for the work done to educate our sons and all children across Wisconsin.

The state partnered with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association to produce and distribute brief radio address once a week.  Audio files and a written transcript of this radio address can be accessed on http://www.wi-broadcasters.org and http://walker.wi.gov/Weekly-Radio-Addresses.  To download an mp3 file, you can right click the radio address link and click “save link as.” Hi, this is Scott Walker. Like many parents across Wisconsin, Tonette and I are excited to see our two sons head back to school. While our two sons have always attended public schools in Wisconsin, this year is a major milestone for us as parents—our oldest son will be heading off to college. This achievement couldn’t have been done without the hard work and dedication …

I hope the teachers keep this up and the politicians hold their ground. It will require a radical event to get someone to reach up an pull the lever on that toilet. Then, perhaps, we can get serious about helping those kids in a way that has been demonstrated to work.   more ›

The First Day Of School

Thousands of Racine Unified School District students started the new school year today. Here's a slice of one teacher's and one student's day.

Becky Steinbach, a second-grade teacher at Gifford Elementary, began her 27th year of teaching on Tuesday. Her first day of school started off with a heavy dose of adrenaline as her classroom of 28 students entered the room with their parents. “I’m a third generation teacher, my mom even gets that feeling when she sees the yellow school busses driving around town and when the back-to-school bins at the store come out, and she’s retired,” she said. “I’m the same way.” Second-grader Matthew Siler, her first student, walked into the classroom with his dad Nick Siler. “Do you remember where your desk is?” Nick asked Matthew. “I do,” he said, walking over to one of the middle desks. Taking boxes of Kleenex and school supplies out of his …

According to the DPI and the Public Policy Forum, RUSD has enough teachers to still have 14 kids in a class. That is the problem and why we needed Act 10.   more ›

I just find this whole list of comments deplorable, my children get free lunch because since I was laid off 4 years ago( while I was pregnant) I have not been able to obtain a position that I can work at without costing more than I would make in childcare, after school care, and transportation expenses at the end of the week. My husband works full time and I am now in school to attempt to obtain …   more ›

Share Your Lunch Box Memories

Do you remember your favorite lunch box? Today's kids have as many options as ever but nothing will take the place of the Partridge Family or Scooby-Doo.

Lunch boxes have changed in design and shape over the years, but the basic idea is the same. Along with space inside for a cold drink, sandwich and snack, the cover is devoted to a favorite cartoon, character, TV show or movie. That's why Justin Bieber and Darth Vader and Japanese cartoon characters are staring out at shoppers from the shelves of Target. Back in the '70s, the lunch boxes were aluminum. In the '80s, they gave way to plastic. Vintage lunch boxes now are highly collectible. They are displayed as collections in people's homes, and sometimes they get their own art gallery shows. (Yes, I've gone to one.) Do you remember a favorite lunch box? What was it? Have a picture handy? Share it on the Caledonia Patch!

More Racine Unified Students Take ACT, Scores Down Slightly

More students than ever before are taking the college-readiness exam, but scores overall went down almost half a point in 2012 from 2011.

**Updated 8:30 a.m. Despite more students taking the ACT last year, Racine Unified's average score went down slightly. According to a press release from the district, Unified students' average composite score was 20.2 in 2012, down from 20.6 in 2011. State scores average in at 22.1 while the national average is 21.1. Only students at Walden III High School exceeded both of those numbers, coming in with an average composite score of 22.4. The highest score possible on the ACT is a composite score of 36. More students than ever before took the exam. A total of 748 students participated in the ACT in 2012, up from 742 in 2011. Hispanic participation increased the most, from 86 in 2011 to 142 in 2012, a 60 percent increase from year-to-year. “…

That is true, however, that is hardly the only factor affecting ACT scores or educational achievement. Quite a few of the southern states require ALL graduating seniors to take the ACT. Look at the above percentages of our seniors taking the ACT, less than 50% of the main three high schools. I'm sure there are other factors, too. I believe that at least the REAL school, and possibly Walden III, …   more ›
